Namie Amuro: ‘Genius 2000’ – Album Review

Released: January 26, 2000

If you though the trippy collection of genres from Concentration 20 was weird, then get ready for this entry. Genius 2000, Namie Amuro’s third album, sees a prospective collaboration with American producer Dallas Austin, whom has worked with the likes of TLC, Janet Jackson, and Madonna. And in fact, what does that offer exactly? A fiercely polished R&B album with elements of pop, dance, minimal electronic music, and heavy hip-hop; this is the first time Amuro finally sets the scene straight and deliveries a great album with such classic tunes. Take “Leavin’ for Las Vegas”, “Something ‘Bout the Kiss”, and “Love 2000” for example; three gorgeous R&B tunes that could have literally swiped all them hip-hop girls with them fake-ass lace-front weaves and “gangsta” stylings back to the hood gurl (yes I went there *snap, snap*). What’s refreshing is that, while Namie maybe a sexy hot mama, she doesn’t push her pretty-woman image too hard and allows herself to change to her fullest desires.

The only issue to the album is the Tetsuya Komuro collaborations. Half the album is slick hip-hop with groovy rhythmic paces, whilst the other half is strict J-pop tunes, that literally sound like other entries that other Japanese pop stars would’ve released during the 2000 hey-day. It’s grabbing Namie by both arms, tugging on her to easily fall into a pigeonholed genre. The J-pop music slightly becomes regressive in Namie’s wanting of a newer musical style, and luckily the singles “Something ‘Bout the Kiss”, “Love 2000”, “I Have Never Seen”, and “Respect the Power of Love” represented Namie’s new style well. Alongside this, Namie’s vocals works so much better in the R&B tunes than it does in J-Pop. But as a whole, Genius 2000 shows a very clear and big step forward in her music releases.
