DAOKO: “Haikei Goodbye Sayonara” – Single Review

Released: April 15, 2017

In my opinion, J-diva Daoko has become one of the biggest newcomers in the fluffy land of J-pop. In fact, some of her hits like the intoxicating TeddyLoid collaboration “Daisuke” is by far one of the most impressive numbers in recent years. Fast-forward several months later, and you get “Haikei Goodbye Sayonara”, the brand new banger from the singer. Just to be very clear, this is no ordinary drill… this is a F-ing J-pop emergency!

The opening to “Haikei Goodbye Sayonara” is a little odd for a Daoko track. It starts with a precious Anime-esque piano riffs, which keeps the overall appeal very ambiguous. But when her kawaii-vocals start to belt in, the composition swifts to a more minimalistic electro beat that is very reminiscence to your typical four-on-the-floor number that could easily enter the US top 100. It also reminds me of the work by Japan’s most notorious producer, Mr. Yasutaka Nakata, especially with it’s light-weight production.

Okay y’all… I’mma have to spill the tea though, because as a whole, “Haikei Goodbye Sayonara” doesn’t exactly SCREAM perfection (no shade gurl…). Daoko’s vocals are very delicate and cute, but with a progressive beat like this, I can only question the mixture as a little uneven. The most notable moment is of course the chorus; her performance seems a little off to the beat, even though the verses are more enjoyable. BUT I LOVE THE CHORUS SOUND SO MUCH that it’s a little disappointing.

But overall, that’s not her fault. As a whole, “Haikei Goodbye Sayonara” is pretty attractive to listen to, and definitely is a second best—in terms of production and execution—to “Daisuke”. It’s catchy and very approachable, and the gorgeous sound just solidifes the potential even more! Lord Jesus, Daoko is coming threw all you J-pop divas, so y’all better watch out because she’s gon’ be snatching all ya wigs with her fire beats! GO DAOKO GO! (Check out the additional music video where she gets frisky and sexy with a photographer… yuss!)
