After her glorious return to the music scene with last year’s Fantome, J-Pop goddess Utada Hikaru bounced back with a new style. And this style has been demonstrated into her two new stunning singles “Oozora de Dakisheimete” and “Forevermore”. Yes y’all, J-Pop alarm bells are ringing!
The singer announced back in February that she was to transfer to Epic Records—a sub-label underneath Sony Music Japan—after an 18 year streak with Universal Music. She also hinted that she would be releasing new music from there onwards, but only little details were spilt. And finally, Utada-chan has released “Oozora de Dakisheimete”—a ethereal pop-dance number—and “Forevermore”, which was released only a few days ago. Both of these songs were used in two different promotional campaigns; the first being for Suntory water, and the latter for the J-drama Aimen, Aishiteru.
To be honest; these songs are F-ing FIRE! And here’s the thing; I absolutely loved Fantome because it showcased a new direction and maturity that I felt Utada had never entered, but now it’s so nice to get a spark of yet-another musical change by the singer. “Oozora de Dakisheimete” is a fluffy pop number that instantly reminds me of the gorgeous arrangements and oriental elements from the Ultra Blue and Heart Station days, whereas the jazzy “Forevermore” brings a more bold and commercial sound that I guess Fantome was lacking in. Nevertheless, this is a positive indication that Utada is back to swipe every person’s weaves and dollars from their pockets… and I’m loving it! Plus, both songs have already top several digital charts around Asia, so that’s not surprise!
